Approach
One of the oldest, and largest financial institutions in Africa, Old Mutual, needed to modernise their presence and become more appealing to their young and up-and-coming target market. They wanted to be perceived as a trustworthy company while still appealing to the younger audience. They set out to achieve this by celebrating their African roots through specifically African-styled photos, bright colours, and traditional patterns related to each of the African tribes.
To meet the branding needs, we outsourced the Corporate Identity work to an external agency while VMLY&R focused on the digital products.

The website was a massive undertaking with more than 100 screens and a team of 23 members across multiple companies. To ensure the project’s success, we needed strong collaboration and trust across these teams. To support this, we implemented the SAFe methodology and delivered the project on time and on budget.
As the Lead UI Designer, I focused on delivering high-quality, reusable design work at scale. I created responsive components that adhered to atomic design pattern standards, paying close attention to spacing and layout to achieve a modern, open appearance. I also developed page templates for each section of the website, which accelerated the design and build process. Once the components were finalised, I worked closely with the Design System team to have them stress-tested and added to the shared library.
