The
Impact
Whilst working at VMLY&R as a lead UX/UI designer, I collaborated with a team of four, as well as an external motion graphics company, The Kinetic, to launch the new BMW 3 Series 40 years edition. We took users back in time and into the future with the engaging micro website, featuring a high contrast between the background colour and the colour of the 3 Series, which evoked a feeling of nostalgia.
To ensure a seamless and elegant experience, I used slight animation on the type and repeated the layout to create a visual pattern. I also paid attention to the proximity of the type to reduce clutter and provide users with the right information at the right time.

The team faced technical difficulties in producing 3D animation, so we used a custom frame compression scheme to store video frames in JPEG sprite sheets, as well as separate sprite sheets for the video alpha channel. This reduced the animation size from 20-30MB to 2.5MB and allowed it to work across most browsers and devices. The tiles were loaded sequentially, creating a seamless experience for users.
