Within one of the largest banks in Africa (Standard Bank), cross functional design teams were using various design systems and code languages as there was no official ‘hub’ where all the latest, established patterns could be added, saved and shared.
Designers and developers were therefore spending their time searching for or recreating components. This led to inconsistent (and seemingly unreliable) digital experiences for clients.
As the lead Product Designer, I spearheaded the Global Markets team's initiative to drive innovation and swift execution. Our development of a 'mini' design system was a catalyst for creating a centralised, accessible repository. This progress played a pivotal role in the comprehensive redesign of the bank's visual language. The result is a single source of automatically-updated code sets, patterns, design components, and copy assets, empowering diverse teams to confidently apply what is needed for their respective projects.

Through extensive research on global standards, best-practice DSM guidelines and the Global Markets DSM, our collaboration efforts with Standard Bank centred on the (re)creation of a scalable design system.
I considered the bank’s CI, as well as some valuable insights from participating teams, to audit existing components; develop standardisation methods; refine guidelines; and essentially, centralise documentation. Critical aspects of this work included stress-testing components on all devices and overseeing the code-language development.
01
Standard Bank Award: Best Use of Colour, Layout and Typography.
02
Creation of a multi-faceted application for teams to:
• Access a library of live design and coded components.
• Access custom documentation for specific components.
• Build an interactive prototype that includes functionality for
feedback exchanges (comments).
• Share designs to Jira for developers to inspect.
03
Efficient remote collaboration between the cross-functional DSM team of consultants and Standard Bank employees.
